Welcome to Newbury Chess Club

The chess club reopened after our summer break on Thursday 12th September 2024. Attendance this term has been patchy, so we are now meeting only once or twice a month on a Thursday at 7.30pm. The provisional dates for the rest of Autumn 2024 can be found on the diary page. For two seasons running (2022-3 and 2023-4) our A-team who were champions of Division 2 of the the Berkshire Chess League. Promotion to division 1 proved too much of a challenge. So having come bottom of this division, the team were relegated to division 2. However, our team captain could no longer guarantee to field a full team of 5 players for matches, so for the 2024-5 season we have withdrawn our team from the Berkshire Chess League.

We welcome players of all abilities. When we are not playing rated games, we play Social Chess in a friendly atmosphere, without obeying the rules to the letter (e.g. in a match, of you touch a piece you must move it; in social chess, just take it back as soon as you realise your mistake!)
